Tangariro Alpine Crossing

3 June 2011

I managed to make an amazing trip to Mount Tongariro, a volcanic complex in north island. Its la
st eruption was in 1977. I went for the Tongariro alpine crossing which is rated as the best one day trek in New Zealand. It is a 19.4km journey up to the peak at the height of 1978m. It took me 8.5 hours to finish the trail. I spent too much time taking photos at the first half journey, and consequently I have to run down to the finishing point during the second half of the journey to catch the bus back to the starting point to get my car.

Mount Tongariro and its surroundings are also one of the several locations which Peter Jackson chose to shoot the The Lord of the Rings film trilogy. On the way home, we went to Lake Taupo, Huka Fall, Taupo Thermal Hot Spring and Rotorua Lake.
