We joined Jackson's orchard tour which brought us around their 30ha operation in a yellow electric tour bus. The staff explained the ways of a working orchard but too bad, we could hardly understand all. The tour was approx 45min. At the end of the tour we were given a box of produce from the Fruitstall.
Each of us picked an apple from the trees
The FruitStall
Quince contains apples and pears. Out of curiosity, we bought one piece to taste. Having no idea what it was, we ate it raw. It was hard and tasted really really bad. It was astringent and sour. Now I came to realize most varieties of quince require cooking and they are used to make jam and jelly.
Kiwi berries are small - in the 5 - 20 gram range, with smooth hairless edible skins, and shapes varying from round to elongated. One of the attractions of kiwi berries is that they, like grapes, are a single mouthful. They taste similar to kiwi fruits. Kiwi berries grow on trees. The trees need to be at least 3 years old before they bear fruit. The beautiful white flowers take about 3,5 months to develop into kiwi berries which are then handpicked when they are completely ripe.
The Cromwell basin is home to a host of award-winning wineries
In the 1980's and 90's Cromwell underwent a major transformation with the construction of the Clyde Dam power station. When the dam was completed in 1992, the valley behind it was flooded to create Lake Dunstan. As a result, the original site of Cromwell's historic business district at the junction of the Kawarau and Clutha Rivers now lies at the bottom of the lake.
Without spending overnight here, we drove straight to Paradise, Glenorchy (To be continued)
