Moeraki Boulders, New Zealand

6 October 2011

The Moeraki Boulders are group of very large spherical "stones" on Koekohe Beach near Moeraki on New Zealand's Otaga coast.

From Oamaru, it takes you about 45 minutes, passing by Hampden where you can try the fish and chips at Lockies, which is claimed to be the best fish and chips in New Zealand.

When you reach Moeraki, there is a restaurant. It has an entrance to the beach where you have to pay 2 dollars per person in order to get in. Please ignore that and drive further down (if you go from Oamaru) until you reach a junction. This is the free entrance to the boulders.

These boulders are actually concretions that have been exposed through shoreline erosion from coastal cliffs that back the beach. Some of the boulders weight several tonnes and are up to 3 metres in diameter. They are round because they grow evenly in all directions.
