Oamaru is well known for its blue penguins colonies and proud heritage which is told through the Victorian Precinct. It has one of the country's oldest public gardens, two penguin colonies, four golf courses, museums and many walking and cycling trails. It must definitely not be missed in the travel itinerary.
Once I drove into the town, I fell in love with it. The first thought on my mind was to stay here and got a job. It has everything I need: New World, Mc Donalds, KFC and etc. Unfortunately, we didn't get any offer and consequently we just spent three days visiting this lovely town.
At the end of the year, in November, there will be Oamaru Victorian Heritage Celebration. It is a week when Oamaru celebrates its heritage. Men's beards are handsomely groomed, the women's corsets is fastidiously tightened. We were too early for the celebration unfortunately.

At night, we went to the blue penguins colony. Without paying to join the local tour to see the penguins, we drove the car to the colony and we still saw many little penguins crossing the street. This was the second time I saw the blue penguins. The first time was in Otago Peninsula, Pilot Beach. The experience was totally different (http://yvaine-in-uk.blogspot.com/2011/10/blog-post.html). I felt sorry for the little penguins to live in a place that has been exploited by the tourist. I could see the fear on their face while they were trying to cross the street. Each time a car passed by, they would wait for a long while before they had the courage to cross the street.
