Melbourne Day 4: Great Ocean Road II

3 Jun 2014

We got a map of the Great Ocean Road attractions from the motel owner and had decided to add a few of them into our itinerary. The first was the lookout point near our motel where we could oversee the Apollo Bay. It was a short walk up hill, probably not more than 20 minutes.

The Gables track is an easy return walk(800m) which travels trough a Casuarina grove to a spectacular lookout over the ocean and the reefs around the Moonlight Head. This is one of the highest sea cliffs on mainland Australia. Due to the foggy weather, the lookout failed to give us any surprise. However the grove was definitely impressive.

Not far from the Gables Lookout is where the Wreck Beach is located. This is a difficult walk with 350 steps which takes you to an anchor. However we were not able to locate the anchor.

The famous 12 Apostles are magnificent rock stacks that rise up majestically from the Southern Ocean. The limestone cliffs were created by constant erosion of the limestone cliffs beginning 10-20 million years ago, the stormy Southern Ocean and blasting winds gradually eroded the softer limestone, forming caves in the cliff. The caves eventually became arches and when they collapsed rock stacks up to 45 metres high were isolated from the shore.

This place has an indescribable beauty. The crystal clear water was breathtaking. We wanted to take the steps down to the beach but the rains had stopped us.

London Bridge was originally a natural archway and tunnel in an offshore rock formation, however, it collapsed in 1990 and became a bride without a middle.

We ended our journey and headed to 12 Apostles Cottage, where we spent a night stay. It was a very affordable accommodation which only costed us $150 per night. The cottage was very roomy and the kitchen was well equipped with cooking utensils.
