2017 Europe: Game of Throne "Dubrovnik"

20 - 21 September 2017

I left Kotor early and decided to stop over at Herceg Novi. I spotted a shop called Cogimar which sells seafoods and delicacies along the road not far from Kotor. I thought it was a good place to buy some souvenirs back home. I grabbed some canned seafood and sweet delicacies.

Herceg Novi is recognizable by the abundance of mimosa trees and its numerous flights of stairs. It is a ‘city of the sun’, thanks to the large number of sunny days all year round.

The centre of Herceg Novi is Stari Grad, decorated by buildings dating back to the epochs of Sahat – Kula (1667) and Kanli – Kula (1483). It was rather quiet compared to Kotor when I arrived at about 9.30am. There were more cats roaming in Herceg Novi than than Kotor even thought Kotor is more unofficially symbolized by cats.

I had crepe with ice cream here as my brunch.

It took one hour to cross the border. The queue was long and it was common that passengers came down from the vehicles to walk and some teenagers even play with football while the driver was waiting at the queue. For the first time my passport was not stamped when crossing border. I was panic so when I arrived in Dubrovnik I first went to the police station to check. I was convinced it was alright without the stamp.

I then checked in to Apartment Gera so I could leave my car there and took bus to the city center. The room is big but with very low ceiling. The host and his family stay downstairs. The balcony at the yard was superb with panoramic view to the Adriatic Sea. The bus stop is accessible from the apartment.

Once I reached the town, I first redeemed my 3-day Dubrovnik Card at the tourist center. The 3-day card included bus card, travel guide, and entrance into 10 cultural-historical monuments, 9 top attractions of Dubrovnik, and 1 museum in Cavtat.

With over 250 sunny days per year and a stunning setting on the Adriatic Sea, Dubrovnik is a top destination for anyone who loves to watch the sun drop below the horizon amidst a meditative play of oranges and magenta. Mt Srd is definitely one of the best spots to watch sunset. I bought a one way cable car ticket up to Mt Srd where I enjoyed the most beautiful panoramic views. I wished to have more battery in my phone to capture every moment of the sunset and the sky could be clearer. It was a short walk down from Mt Srd but the problem was the end point was no longer near the old town and I had to crossed a busy highway.

People have been saying Dubrovnik is overrated and crowded with tourists. But my first night at the Dubrovnik old town was quiet and beautifully illuminated. There are little restaurants everywhere - up alleyways, by the harbor, in the various little squares and on the main street. The stari grad in Dubrovnik is magnificent and grand.

Dubrovnik became a prosperous Maritime Republic during the Middle Ages, it became the only eastern Adriatic city-state to rival Venice. In 1979, the city of Dubrovnik joined the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites. Dubrovnik is a stunningly intact walled city on the Adriatic Sea coast.

The city walls walk should not be skipped. The impressive walls that surround the old town are 2km long and can be completed in 2-3 hours. From the city walls you can enjoy amazing views of crowded Stradun. You will also spot the Bell Tower which is 31 metres high.

Walking further you will see Lovrijenac Fortress which stands on the 37 metre high cliff

While walking along the sea section of the walls you will see crystal clear Adriatic sea and passing kayaks. In this section of the wall there are several cafes selling cold drinks and ice creams. Just before the cafes you shall see some ruins.

Lots of the scenes are filmed at Fort Lovrijenac including the tournament thrown in honour of King Joffrey’s name day in season two.

Walking in the old town was tiring as there were many slopes and steps. I stopped for late lunch at an affordable fast food restaurant.
