2017 Europe: Unesco World Heritage of Lake Plitvice

8 September 2017

In the early morning, I checked out from Dal Apartment and drove to Lake Plitvice. It was about two hours of driving. At the entrance, I purchased tickets and map. The staff recommended a 5-6 hour route C.

When it comes to scenery, I always pray to have a sunny day as the view will be more scenic with good sunlight. However it was cloudy and drizzling whole day here. Nevertheless, the beauty of Lake Plitvice still stood out.
On 8 April 1949, Lake Plitvice was proclaimed Croatia’s first national park. The process of tufa formation, which results in the building of the tufa, or travertine, barriers and resulted in the creation of the lakes, is a unique universal value, for which the Plitvice Lakes were internationally recognised on 26 October 1979 with their inscription onto the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Lake Plitvice contains 16 interconnected lakes and 90 over waterfalls at different size. For your information, super small ones are also considered as waterfalls. This place reminded me of JiuZaiGou in China, but not as fascinating as JiuZaiGou in my opinion.
Hollow Cave is an interesting place to visit since it’s different from the other main attractions in Plitvice Lakes. There are steep stairs to climb to the upper lake area but I avoided that the path was muddy.

Later, I took shuttle bus to ST 2 and then a short boat cruise from P1 to P2. The lake was clear and the fish could be clearly seen. The fish were calm as they were not swimming.

From P2 I walked to ST 3 and then I took the shuttle bus back to ST 1. From ST 1, I walked to the entrance and exit the lake. Since it was a cold day, it was time to replenish some energy to warm the body up. I rested in the cafe at entrance and had a burger and hot drink.
