Europe Country 6: Itally III

24 September 2009
Paris Disneyland

The 14-day europe trip ended with one full day at Disneyland, Paris. Do you know how many disneyland theme parks are there in this globe? I made a quick search from the Internet and found this answer:

Disneyland Resort in Anaheim California.
Walt Disney World Resort, Orlando Florida.
Tokyo Disney Resort, Tokyo.
Disneyland Resort Paris, Paris. (Formerly EURO-Disney)
Hong Kong Disneyland Resort, Hong Kong.

Well, I have visited two one them, Hong Kong and Paris. I have three more to go.

I went to Hong Kong Disneyland in 2007, the newest Disneyland on earth. In 2010, I went to the Paris one, which is larger, and obviously looks older. There are two parks in Paris Disneyland, The Disneyland Park and Walt Disney Studios. The former is home to the classic Disney characters set in 5 magical lands, where fairytales really do come true. The latter is the world of cinema and television comes to life. It was a regret that we only bought the Disneyland Park, missing the chances to experience the world of cinema.

One thing I like here was the fast pass. It saved our time on lining up for a queue. It's a ticket that holds your place in line for a ride. It lets you leave and do whatever you want and then get back in line when you are closer to getting on.

There are other things to know about a FastPass. First it is free and only certain rides offer fast passes. It expires at the end of the day and you can't run around and get all your FastPasses at the same time. Your first FastPass tells you when you're allowed to get another one.

Here is how it works:
1.Find the FastPass ticket machine near the line for your ride.
2.Insert your Disneyland admission ticket
3.Grab the FastPass that comes out (and your admission ticket). Keep it!
4.Look at the time printed on the FastPass. You can leave now but come back after the time shown on your ticket.
For instance, if it's now 11am, the FastPass may say "Return between 12:30-1:30". This means you can go, and then come back anytime after 12:30 and get in the special shorter FastPass line anytime within that hour. You'll stand in that line for about 5minutes, maybe 15 if it's hugely crowded that day. I am not too sure if this fast pass was offered in Hong Kong Disneyland four years ago.

The first thing we did once we reach there was to capture a photo together with the entrance. And then the very first thing we did once we entered into the park was to quueu up in order to take a picture with Mickey. This was ridiculous as it took us around an hour just to take a picture and a signature which was not from the true Mickey.

We chose a few of the most adverturous rides. Among them, I love the most. It was really fast and exciting, but I still prefer the one in Hong Kong.

With the limited time spent there, we must be smart enough to choose the best places to visit/best activities to do.

And I was satisfied that we were able to finish almost all the items in our checklist, including the Disney Characters Demonstration and It's a small small world.

Indeed, I never expect It's a small small world was so enjoyable. I loved the decorations so much that they gave a sense of fantasy to me. We grabbed the last half an hour to visit this before we left.

Precious knowledge about the culture in Europe

Towards the end of blogging travelling experience in Europe, it is time now to share some general knowledge about their culture that I gained from my tour guide, Wanda, who is a Taiwanese married to a Dutch. In fact, I should have shared this before I started blogging anything about the sightseeing, but late is always better than never.

This is one thing good about travelling with travel agency. I believe you would not be able to hear so many "stories" about their countries if you are travelling on your own. The information that I am going to tell might not be 100% accurate, though I had tried my best to jot down while Wanda was telling us the information at the same time.
The very first interesting information was about the drivers. The drivers can never be allowed to work more than 12 hours a day. The time starts counting from the moment they leave the hotel until they go back and take rest. They must have at least 9 hours of rest and also one day off after every 6 working days. If they are found to break the regulation and caught for the first time, they will be fined, licensed will be suspended for the second time, and unfortunately will be jailed for the third time. Also, they must have a short break (can't recall the duration) for every few hours (can't recall the figure too) of driving. I believe the government enforces such regulation is to enhance the safety on roads. Yes, I think it is good from a passenger's perspective, but never from a traveller's. Due to the long driving distance and such regulation, we had sacrificed a lot of travelling time. It was my ever first trip without activities at nights.

Holland

I think most of us know that Netherland is well known for its tulips and windmills. If you do not know, I would advice you to read and hear more from people, tv and internet. To my surprise, Wanda told us that the origin of the tulip is Turkey and the windmill was introduced by Arabians. Everybody thinks that tulips come from Holland. Actually, Tulips are native to Central Asia and Turkey. In the 16th Century they were brought to Holland from Turkey, and quickly became widely popular. Today Tulips are cultivated in Holland in great numbers and in huge fields. Dutch bulbs, including tulips and daffodils, are exported all around the world so people think that it's originated from there as well. In fact many cultivated varieties were widely grown in Turkey long before they were introduced to European gardens.
It is more common to see the people here cycling than driving.

Houses are usually tall and skinny, with a small door and big windows. This is due to the fact that in older days, their government charged door taxes based on the door size. So the people make their house with small doors, just enough for a regular person to get through to save their tazes. Also, since land is expensive, they build their houses taller and skinny.

You must be surprised how the furniture get in with such a small door. Well, there is a hook on the top used to transport their large furnitures from ground to the upper floor through their big windows.

Belgium

It is only founded for only around 170 years and consequently there is not national language. They have three official languages: Dutch, French, and German. Some of them speak English. The people here works for 11 months but get salary for 13 months.

Belgium encourages the people to have children. The government pays 80 euro for the first child and doule up for each subsequent child. Children under 12 years old can enjoy free rides on all tranportaions.

Belgium is famous for its Godiva chocolate.

Luxembourg

This country has
1) high number of working women
2) women can enjoy hign number of maternity leaves for 6 months and yet get 70% of their salary
3) high cleanliness

Heilderberg

90% are students

San Marino

The smallest republic country in europe which is situated in Itally

Switzerland

It is common to see tunnels and raiways along the road. There is one tunnel called San Gottardo Tunnel which is 17km long.

Cravings @ Giza

26 June 2010

First of all, I would like to address my thanks to my brother and sister in law for this belated birthday celebration. It was not really a celebration, but they treated me this memorable dinner.

They decided to try this kitchen for the first time. It is situated in this newly opened plaza called Giza at Kota Damansara.
We had done some researches online and got to know about their signature dishes such as 12 inch monster burger, chicken treasure and Halloween Dinner. The names sound so creative and interesting. Taking the Halloween dinner as example, you would not know what it is actually by just hearing the name. I guess it is their business tactic to captivate people to try their food for curiosity sake, and yes, we are ones among them!!!
pic: The restaurant is designed to be simple with some flowery decorations.
pic: I think this staircase is the most outstanding design of the restaurant.
pic: simple and comfortable
We had eventually made up our mind to order the 12 inch monster burger, Halloween Dinner, Chicken Treasure, Vanila milk shake, peppermint passion tea, and cappuccino.
It is now time to judge their food. I would give 4.5 stars for their creativity in both naming and displaying their dishes, however, I would only rate 3 for their quality. The taste was a bit mild, regardless it is food or drink. Nevertheless, I am still amazed by the chef's brilliant ideas in mixing and matching the food such as noodles in soy, fried rice in pumpkin and so forth.

The idea of Chicken Treasure is to stuff sausage and ham into drumsticks. It is sold at the price of RM19.90 which I think it is a bit pricey for its portion.
Last but not least, the Halloween Dinner (RM29.90), which is actually normal fried rice but placed in the pumpkin which serves as a container. I would strongly advise you to eat together with the pumpkin meat.

Europe Country 8: French II

23 Sept 2009

Paris is a city with heavy traffic, just like what we face in KL. It is not surprising that you would need to spend one to two hours to reach the city of Paris from your home/hotel. The Arc de Triomphe is a monument in Paris that stands in the centre of the Place Charles de Gaulle, also known as the Place de l'étoile. Officially, it is the Arc de Triomphe de l'étoile, as a smaller Arc de Triomphe du Carrousel exists nearby. It is located at the western end of the Champs-élysées.
The triumphal arch honours those who fought for France, particularly during the Napoleonic Wars. On the inside and the top of the arc there are all of the names of generals and wars fought. Underneath is the tomb of the unknown soldier from World War I.
If you still remembered, I told you in my last post that I would have another chance of visiting Eiffel Tower. Here it was!!! The Eiffel Tower, which is the tallest building in Paris, is an 1889 iron latice tower that has become both a global icon of France and one of the most recognizable structure in the world. It is named after its designer, engineer Gustave Eiffel.

The tower has three levels for visitors. Tickets can be purchased to ascend by stairs or lift to the first and second levels. The walk to the first level is over 300 steps, as is the walk from the first to the second level. The third and highest level is accessible only by lift. Both the first and second levels feature restaurants.

I have heard about the safety issues in France/Paris. We were always warned to keep an eye on our belongings even when we were dining. You will also be seeing a lot of Africans running their "small" business there (mainly selling key chains) with their 200% "warmth". In order to survive, they really do not mind to go after you until your bus just to persuade you to buy something from them.

Concord Square, its 86,400 square metres make it the largest square in the French capital. Cleopatra needle monument, The Fountain of River Commerce and Navigation, The Invalides, and monuments are situated around here.

Cleoptra's needle monument, is the popular name for each of three Ancient Egyptian obelisks re-erected in London, Paris, and New York City during the nineteenth century. The London and New York ones are a pair, while the Paris one comes from a different original site where its twin remains.

Although the needles are genuine Ancient Egyptian obelisks, they are somewhat misnamed as they have no particular connection with Queen Cleopatra VII of Egypt, and were already over a thousand years old in her lifetime. The Paris "needle" was the first to be moved and re-erected, and the first to acquire the nickname.

Fountain of River Commerce and Navigation are two monumental fountains located in the Place de la Concorde in the center of Paris. The south fountain commemorates the maritime commerce and industry of France, and the north fountain commemorates navigation and commerce on the rivers of France.

The Invalides, is a complex of buildings in the 7th arrondissement of Paris, France, containing museumns and monuments, all relating to the military history of France, as well as a hospital and a retirement home for war veterans, the building's original purpose.
It was about autumn time when I was there. Fortunately I was able to experience Fall Colors here, a phenomenon that affects the normally green leaves of many deciduous trees and shrubs by which they take on, during a few weeks in the autumn season, one or many colors that range from red to yellow.

We headed to Louvre Museum next. It is one of the world's largest museums, the most visited museum in the world, and a historic monument. The museum is housed in the Louvre Palace which began as a fortress built in the late 12th century.

Venus de Milo, is an acient Freek statue and one of the most famous works of ancient Greek sculpture. Its arms and original plinth have been lost. Although the Venus de Milo is widely renowned for the mystery of her missing arms enough evidence remains to prove that the right arm of the goddess was lowered across the torso with the right hand resting on the raised left knee so the sliding drapery wrapped around the hips and legs could be held in place.
There is a filled hole below the right breast that originally contained a metal tenon that would have supported the separately carved right arm.The left arm was held at just below the eye level of the statue above a herm while holding an apple. The right side of the statue is more carefully worked and finished than the left side or back, indicating that the statue was intended to be seen mainly as a profile from its right.

Below are some of the collections displayed in the museum.

The Mona Lisa, is a half-length portrait and depicts a woman whose facial expression is frequently described as enigmatic. Others believe that the slight smile is an indication that the subject is hiding a secret. In 1911, it was stolen and copied; the copies were sold as the genuine painting. It was recovered in 1913.

It is displayed in a purpose-built, climate-controlled enclosure behind bullet-proof glass. It is so much smaller than I expected and yet we were only allowed to see it from quite a distance.

Our next mission was to have the French meal. While we could not afford to have it at the restaurant recommended by the tour, we went for another one located at somewhere near the Opera House Paris in stead. The most outstanding feature of this opera house is its golden sculptures on its roof.
We had difficulties in choosing the best restaurant for the French meal. We wished to taste the best with the same amount of money spent. Yea, we guys always opt for value for money. Since we had no idea which restaurant was the best, we just made our bet on this Sofa Cade Studio since it had the most customers in it. You are right, this was the total we have spent for six persons. 2 appertizer, 6 main course and 3 desserts. Fair enough if you are not taking currency exchange into consideration.
Let me proudly introduce the first starter, Potted goose terrine and cured "Serrano" ham served with a 5/6-inch crispy bread and some pickles, 8 euros. I am not sure if the terrine was made of foie gras (liver), probably just goose meat. I hope it was but personally I do not think so because if it was, I would not have consumed it so easily I guess. Indeed, the texture and the taste told me the answer.
I really like the 2nd starter, 6 Burgundy snails/escargot in their shell, garlic butter, 11 euros. It was a fun to have my first experience to get the meat out using a little special tong with attached fork.
The next one would be my main course, duck tournedos with poached peaches and vegetable delight, 13.90 euros. From appearance aspect, it looked attractive with little colourful vegetables surround the meat. But they were tasteless. The meat was nice but the layer of the fat was too thick,
Finally, it was time for the desserts. French is always well known for their desserts. We definitely would not want to miss this opportunity. We ordered three, the first was this creme brulee, 7.20 euros. It is a dessert consisting of a rich custard base topped with a contrasting layer of hard caramel. It was really nice especially its slight crispy layer of caramel.
The next one was strawberry tart, 7.20 euros. The strawberries themselves already looked so tempted that we could not wait any more to make our first bite. Unlike the Portuguese tart or chinese tart that we used to eat, the western-style tart is relatively hard. However, it was also nice, probably because it was fresh to us.
Last but not least, passion fruitee which costed us 7.20 euros too. It looked colorful but wasnt really special.
