Garmin on Symbian, Nokia E71

25 Sept 2010
I finally have my Garmin working perfectly on my phone now. Here are the steps:

Installation:

1) Download Garmin Mobile XT for SymbianS60 version 5.00.50 from
http://www8.garmin.com/software/GarminMobileXTforSymbianS603rdEdition_50050.exe

2) Connect your phone to PC via Mass Storage Mode through a USB cable

3) Copy the entire Garmin and other folders to the root directory of your memory card

4) Unplug the cable, search for the .sis file that you have just copied into your phone

5) click on the .sis file to start installation

Unlocking the device

1) go to GmobileXt on the phone

2) Go to main menu --> setting --> about. If you are unable to directly go into the menu, but prompted with a screen to enter the key and etc, choose "Connect to GPS device"

3) On the About screen, find the Card Id titled "Unlock ESN" and exit the application.

4) Record this ID, extract the keygen (garmin_kgen.exe) and run it on you PC. Enter the Card ID and press generate toget the device unlock code for your card.

5) Copy the unlock code to notepad and save as sw.unl

6) Place this file in the root directory of the Garmin folder.

7) Run the application and now you should be able to skip being asked to enter the license key.

How to use A-GPS

1) Go to phone main menu --> tools --> setting --> general --> positioning

2) In positioning method, check Assisted GPS, Integrated GPS, and Network Base

3) In positioning server, set server address as supl.nokia.com

4) If you already have an internet setup, choose the appropriate access point. If you do not have one, setup an internet access. For DIGI, go to *128*6*4*3# and press dial button. You will receive the setup promptly. Open the configuration message, Options and then save. Now you can set the access point as Digi Internet.
I think it worths me to spend 10 cents for the inital locking. At least I do not have to wait for 30 min to get the satelite signal.

Nokia GPS - Ovi Map

22 Aug 2010

Nokia has its free walk and drive navigation for 74 countries in 46 languages now. Maps are cached offline for future use. I found out it works faster, and looks more "eligant" with the 3D view. It is easy to download, upgrade and install with no cracking required. The only thing to complain is the search function which turns out to be poor, having you to key in the search keyword in a pattern in order to get the result.

I have been frustrated by the garmin's slow performance in getting GPS satelite and locking. So I decided to give this a try. It spent me two days doing research and getting the map into my phone.

Here are the steps:
1) Connect your phone to PC via USB and choose PC suite mode when you are prompted with the selection.

2) install ovi maps

Ovi suite is an application which works similarly as PC suite. But this allows you to download your map and navigation voice easily.

3) When you open the application for the first time, you would be prompted to create an account. Please do so and continue with the wizard.

4) To download the map, make sure you are connected to PC using PC Suite/Ovi Suite. From the home menu, choose Map icon (5th from the left), which looks like a green compass. I am not sure if login is required but I realized that I have to login or else I would not be able to connect to the map serve and get directed to the screen below. Here you can choose the country maps and voice guidance from the list.

5) In your phone, go to Menu, GPS, and Maps. Click on Option, Settings, then Navigation. Choose the Drive Guidance and Walk Guidance as the one you have just downloaded from Ovi Suite.

That is all!!! You will be able to get the signal really fast but I am not sure if it charges since Nokia claims it is free. However, I tried to change my phone mode to offline, and sadly I could not get the signal and consequently the navigation failed. I am going to Nokia center to verify this again.

One more tips for you all. I really do not like the search function. What I would do is to get the GPS coordinate of a location in Internet, set the coordinate and save it as one of my favourites to my phone. When I need the navigation, I will just have to choose from the favourites with no searching the place required.

Well, too bad that I could not find anyway to directly enter the coordinate. There is a workaround though.

1) Go to Menu, GPS, and Landmarks
2) Click on Options, New Landmark, then Enter Manually.
3) Fill up the details of the place like name, description and etc. Scroll down towards the end and you will see Latitude and Longitude. Key in the coordinate here and click Done.

When you need to get the navigation from your current place,
1) Go back to GPS main menu, choose Drive or Walk.
2) Choose Set Destination
3) Choose Favourites
4) Select the one you have saved into the favourites.

Happy Touring:)

Gathering @ Pavillion KL

15 August 2010

I made a date with my best friend known during Form 1. We just realized that we have been in friendship for 10 years. I proposed to have a lunch at Food Republic in Pavillion, since I miss the Thye Heong fried prawn noodle, which I first had in Singapore.

I think the price is very reasonable. It is sold at the price of only RM7.50 with three prawns.

I do not normally eat doughnut. But J Co's would always be an exception for me. It is RM7.50 for three pieces.

Apart of only choosing the sweet doughnut, I got another one which tastes salty, the Mona Piza. I think it is nice and special as it is rare to have a salty doughnut.

We spent the following hour to capture some nice portraits.

The Montserrat Rack Railway or Cremallera de Montserrat is a mountain railway line north of Barcelona in the Catalonia region of Spain. The line runs from Monistrol de Montserrat to the mountain-top monastery of Montserrat.

Montserrat is a mountain near Barcelona, in Catalonia, Spain. Montserrat literally means "jagged mountain" in Catalan. It describes the peculiar aspect of the rock formation, which is visible from a great distance The mountain is composed of strikingly pink conglomerate, a form of sedimentary rock, popular with climbers.

Santa Maria de Montserrat, a Benedictine abbey which hosts the Virgin of Montserrat(the black virgin) sanctuary. The virgin of Montserrat is a statue of the Virgin Mary and infant Christ. Here is one tips to share with you while you are in the church during their choral. Please do not make any noise, not even whispering to your friend, otherwise, you will be asked by the one standing nearby you to keep silent.

We went to Park Guell later on, a public park brimming with imagination and symbolism that was transformed from a failed garden city. It is another piece of work by Gaudi.

The calvary
it occupies one of the highest areas in the park, where in the original project the chapel was going to be built

The calvary is the highest point of the garden. From here, you will be able to see the city of Barcelona below you.

stairway
45 steps on two symmetrical sides join the hypostyle hall and market place.

The viaducts
thress streches of viaducts rise above the vaults formed by organic leaning columns on the Rosary pathway.

An entrance to paradise - Caretaker's lodge
Gaudi was probably inspired by the bread and sugar house from the children's tale called Hansel and Gretel

The dragon
located on the main stairway, it is prefabricated in hollow brick and decorated, after put into position, with ceramic trencadis.

The trencadis of diverse colors that covers the dragon is specially devised to emulate this creature's scales. In order to increase the credibility of the texture, Gaudi distributed semi-spherical protuberances on the surface of the sculpture.

The exterior wall
it was more than 2 metres high and devised to circle the park, in order to isolate its inhabitants from city hubbub

Kong Sai Zai/广西仔

7 August 2010

I have been hearing about this restaurant for quite some time. My friends claim that they serve pleasing taste of the cooking of kwong sai. The dishes here are slightly different than what you can order at the other restaurants where the food here are not too commercialized here. They serve steamed chicken/白切鸡,steamed duck/西宁蒸鸭,pork knuckle with vinegar and black beans/猪脚醋,soup/炖汤 and etc.

We ordered this belacan kangkung which tasted so great. However, I would like it even more if it was cooked with more minced meat and dried shrimps.

We had chosen two soups, winter melon soup and fish soup with black bean. The price are fairly reasonable as they only costed RM4 and RM6 respectively. The fish soup however didn't taste so good.

The curry pork rib was not bad. As I do not like those curry which are too strong with spice, this one suited my taste.
Now I understand why this steamed chicken is so popular. The sauce is the main soul. It is my all time favourite in my home town especially during chinese new year, but I never realized it is actually kong sai's food until today. The main ingredient of the sauce is the sand ginger, which could be hardly bought at market. I can easily get it from the back yard of my house in Ipoh :) The chicken was tender and smooth.

Zuan Yuan Restaurant @ One World Hotel

6 August 2010

It was a special day with an unusual occasion, a luxurious lunch among our sales ops team. It was treated by our business application manager in Phoenix, Arizona, USA for our team's good performance.

Given a budget of usd 20 for each person, we voted either to have the meal at Zuan Yuan or Kura which both of them are located in One World Hotel. Considering that Zuan Yuan serves "Eat All You Can" high class dim sum, we finally decided to go for this since we have three guys here who can be big eaters.

The price for the buffet is RM48++. You can choose one among the two choices, Emperor Set and Empress Set. All the items listed are unlimited orders except for the soup and prawn noodles.

The sets do not come with drinks. Since we have another RM10 left for each person, we ordered a pot of 12-year-Pu Er tea. This cost RM12 per person.

The soup you can order from emperor set will be a 生翅灌汤饺, a soup containing steamed seafood dumpling with superior stock, while empress set serves 鱼翅羹, shark fin soup.

One thing "special" about the dim sum here is that they are all halal, which means they are not made by pork. This makes some of the dim sum taste worse than they should be. I am alright with that because I am not a pork lover. I expect they will replace the pork with chicken, but.....almost all of them are with prawns. The Siu Mai is stuffed with steamed glutinous. I do not really like it, not also chee cheong fun. Among all of them, I love the shark fin siu mai/鱼翅卖,yam siu mai/芋头卖,bean curd roll/腐皮卷,and chilled aloe vera infused with lemon grass/香茅芦苇冻.

Diversity

We have 26 alphabets, but they can eventually be combined in different ways to form different languages.

August = Agost = Agosto = Aout. All of them are referring to the month of August, but they can be spelled and pronounced differently.

So when you are travelling to a country which the language is unfamiliar to you, you would have to do some body language in order to deliver your message.

Fortunately, the numbering is standardized. At least when you are purchasing, you know $100 means $100, but not others. Of course you would have to consider the currency exchange, $100 may end up equating to only RM30.

Have you ever imagine how the days would be if we have different numbering for each country too?

I couldnt imagine the consequences. If you were in USA, and their numbering sequence is the opposite 9,8,7,6,5,4,3,2,1, $100 would be greater than $900 in this case. and then you will have to convert $900 instead of $100 back to your own currency.
