Earthquake resistance buildings in New Zealand

28 Feb 2011 I am sure many of us who are planning to travel in New Zealand, are frightened now by the 6.3-magnitude earthquake struck on Christchurch in February 2011. We all feel sad and worried to see the number of death is increasing to over 100.

Look into the link below and under the "Majar Earthquakes", you can have the idea on the earthquake history in New Zealand, along with their fatalities.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_earthquakes_in_New_Zealand

Below is another chart showing the risk of earthquake at different areas.
http://blog.teara.govt.nz/2011/02/24/wellington-christchurchs-earthquake-risk/

Some of you must be wondering if the buildings there are well designed and equiped to resist for the ground shaking. Some of you even started to blame the government for the earthquake in Christchurch which has taken more than 100 lives.

Well, I do believe many of the buildings are earthquake resistant, if not all. Otherwise, the number of death would have been even higher. To proof this, I did some research and below are some information I found.

http://www.teara.govt.nz/en/earthquakes/4
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Earthquake_engineering

"City lifelines – water, sewerage and drains, gas, electricity, telecommunications and transport networks – are also threatened by earthquakes. Lifeline engineering aims at reducing both the damage and the time needed to restore services."

For those who have lost their lives, please rest in peace. For those who were injured, please be strong to get through the suffer and pain. For their family members, please take good care.

For those who have intention to visit New Zealand, take things as they come.

New Zealand - Flight

26 February 2011

In Nov/Dec last year, Airasia launched direct flights to Christchurch, New Zealand for the first time. It is definitely a good news to all of us who are going to New Zealand as we can have affordable flight to our destination now. I did not managed to get the lowest fare (MYR222 including baggage), but I am satisfied enough to get a one-way flight at the price of MYR355 per person, excluding the charge for baggage and food.

Our initial plan was to stay a couple of days in Christchurch after we touched down. We could take the opportunity to open an IRD account, bank account, and look for jobs before we decided which city to go next. Due to the earthquake last week, we have finally changed our mind to directly move to Wellington since New Zealand Ariline is giving great promotion now. It is even cheaper than taking the ferry to cross the strait from Piton to Wellington. At first, we had struggles to choose whether to go Auckland, or Wellington.

As you can see from the table above, the pricing for Auckland and Wellington is more or less the same. Auckland is situated at the top of north island and Wellington is located at the bottom of north island. Most of the job opportunities are concentrated at the middle of north island, such as Hastings. Whichever we go, we would need to travel to the middle. The differences are only the flight's departure time, the duration, and of course your personal preferences.

In order to save the time and transportation to go back and forth between the airport and the hostel in Christchurch, I finally proposed to go Wellington as there are flight to there on the same day we would arrive in Christchurch. And each of us was only charged NZD81, giving us the flexibility to choose the seats (subjected to availability) and change the flight until one day before our departure day.

This is our flight details......for only NZD81 per person including a 23kg checked-in baggage allowance.

Please read more in below link if you think 23kg is not enough.

My Dancing Life

1226 February 2011

I have been taking part in culture dance since I was 9. I quit in my 20's and after that, I learnt hip hop and various modern dances, occasionally. I was originally from Chin Woo/精武, but I have switched to Pooi Lam Old Students' Association when I was 14, after being captivated by one of their well arranged and performed dance. I was greatly happy that I was given a chance to play a role in this dance performance not long after joining this association. I supposed to have a recording for it, but unfortunately it could not be played back as it was corrupted. It is my favourite dance among all, followed by the dance that you can see in the first video below.

The name of this dance is 庆典, meaning celebration. Unfortunately we did not practise well enough and it turned out to be disappointing.

During my last performance in our association's anniversary dinner in 2006, I was asked by my coach to compose a dance choreography myself, where I would be the only dancer in this. Oh my God, I can dance, I can teach, but not compose!!!! Still, I felt proud to be given such opportunity and finally I went to buy some vcds with winning dances from China, and stole some ideas from them :) And below was my creation. I understand there are a lot of room for improvement, but I was only given a month of time.

Lately, I involved myself in belly dance, MTV jazz, and hip hop. If you are interested, please see this.

All good things come to an end

9 February 2011
I have finally tendered my resignation today. It was a tough process to go through. The nervousness was huge as if I was waiting for a job interview. It was my first resignation ever in my life.
Despite the fast and strong heart beating, I booked a conference room and requested from my supervisor for a short discussion. He came in and I saw some curiousity on his face, wondering what I was going to discuss.
Right after he sat down, I tendered my resignation letter and told him that I am leaving the country soon. As expected, I was asked a series of questions : Reason, future plan, comment and etc.
I was greatly relieved after hearing his comments about my good performance. Though I did not totally agree, I just accepted :). I was happy enough to know that in his opinion, I was a valuable and useful asset to the company.
The struggle started after he asked me to consider extending my service, if not staying back. My mind was not moved to change the decision, but my heart was moved as I started to imagine how sad the people around here, or even including myself would be about my leaving.
Among all, I have the strongest bond with Mr J, followed by a group of ladies such as hy, yh, bk, and sk. Mr J has been patiently imparting knowledge to me. And the team has brought out the best in me in my first formal job out of University by giving support and guidance throughtout the working time here.
They are more than colleague, but also good friends who can make fun and hang out with. All good things come to an end. Let us appreciate the two months left and spent the time together as much as we can.

I hereby would like to express my gratitude to Mr J, hy, bk, sk, louis, Mr S, Mr W and all others who have been putting effort on me.

2011 Chinese New Year

2-5 February 2011

Reunion Dinner

6 of us including my little baby nephew in my sister in law's stomach had a "sumptuos" dinner with great varieties.

1st day of 2011 Chinese New Year

And for the first dinner of the Rabbit year, we had another 8 dishes.
2nd day of 2011 Chinese New Year

On the second day, my sister and brother in law came back and again, we had a complete reunion dinner with more dishes. The smoke roast duck from "Yang Wei" stood out among all.

3rd day of 2011 Chinese New Year

The third day was full of gathering. We had an annual vegetarian lunch gathering with the other two families, who are friends of my parents.
At night, I had another gathering with my old schoolmates of my secondary school. I have never been seeing them since my high school graduation and surprisingly we could still spend the time chatting with each other without any problem.
