It was our very first day of the trip, out there it was drizzling but it had not kept us in the hotel. We kicked start our journey by walking around the Melbourne City Center immediately after we checked into our hotel at Claremont Guest House & Apartments in South Yarra. We only had one day to spend in the city and hence we did not want to waste any time to rest despite after long flight from Malaysia. We had a simple and classy family room which only costed AUD 156 with shared public bathrooms and no kitchen.
Melbourne is Australia's second largest city and it is a cultural capital with Victorian-era architecture, extensive shopping, museums, galleries, gardens and laneways. Melbourne is the only city in Australia where trams still operate, with the Melbourne tram network making up a large portion of the Melbourne public transport system. You can easily see the iconic Melbourne trams bustling through the city and suburbs.
Center Pl and Degraves St is where you can find cafes which serve sandwiches, pasta, and coffee. I still miss those sandwiches badly.
Since opening its doors way back in 1892, the Block Arcade has remained one of Melbourne's best-loved and most ornate shopping precincts. The arcade boasts a soaring glass canopy and mosaic floors, inspired by Milan's famed Galleria Vittoria Emanuele however the Block Arcade is definitely smaller and less impressive. Here you can also find the iconic Hopetoun Tea rooms, in operation since the arcade was first built. Right beside its door is where those lovely and mouth watering cakes are displayed. I am pretty sure you will be captivated and could not resist to take our your camera. Do come in the morning to taste their hot-selling pavlova which is usually sold out before noon.
Flinders Street Station is Australia's oldest train station, and with its distinctive yellow facade and green copper dome it is a city icon.
You will not miss the sacred and serene St Paul's Anglican Cathedral when passing through here. The architectural's design theme of the cathedral resembled those magnificent Anglican churches in UK.
The Hosier Lane was my favorite place to go of the day. It is packed full of amazing street art. All the walls are covered by stencils, paste-ups and murals in an electric mix of art-installation. You could probably spend hours here just perusing the individual pieces of graffiti.
