2022 Austria Day 1: Vienna - Karlskirche, Imperial Treasure, Prater

8 Sep 2022: Day 1

This was my first oversea trip post covid. As I was planning for pregnancy soon I really wanted to go somewhere far and beautiful because it would be hard to go travel after having a child. I shortlisted Austria, Turkey, and Greece. Eventually Austria was picked. As usual, my parents will be my travel companions.

We flew to Vienna on Qatar Airways, via Doha. The air fare was S$1,134 per person. The seat was comfortable and food especially dinner was quite good.

We planned to sightsee in Vienna for three days, using 72-hour City Card. We did not choose Vienna Pass because unlikely we would visit that many places to recover the cost. City Card entitled us to get free, unlimited use of the city's metro, tram, train, and bus lines around the city and discounted price on popular attractions.

Once we touched down and checked into BeFree Hostel, we immediately set off to Karlskirche, which is 18th-century baroque church built by Emperor Charles VI. With City Card, the ticket was 5 Euro, which also included the panorama lift to view the dome paintings and for views across the city. But trust me, the panarama city view was not really fantastic.

We had quick and light lunch at metro station

Our next stop was Imperial Treasure Vienna, which is home to two imperial crowns as well as the Burgundian treasure and the treasure of the Order of the Golden Fleece. The ticket was 13 Euro. There were many treasures, and I would just show some of them in this post,

The Imperial Crown of the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation is the highlight of the collection: Created in the second half of the 10th century, it was used to crown the empire's emperors. The octagonal crown was highly symbolic and is decorated with numerous biblical references.

The second important crown in the Imperial Treasury is the Austrian imperial crown. It was made in 1602 as a private crown for Emperor Rudolf II. (1552-1612). From 1804, it acted as the crown of the newly created Austrian Empire. However, it was never used to crown an Austrian emperor.

We decided to have snack during tea time before we went to our last destination of the day. We ordered crisscut fries and chicken tenders from McDonald.

The Wurstelprater is an amusement park and section of the Wiener Prater (a park) in Leopoldstadt, Vienna, Austria. The purpose we visited here was for its Giant Ferris Wheel. It is almost 65 meters tall, it offers a breathtaking view of the city. We actually were not interested to ride on it, so we just took pictures of it from the ground. The Giant Ferris Wheel was erected in 1897 to mark the 50th year of Emperor Franz Joseph's accession to the throne. It has been an enduring features of the city's skyline ever since

My dad had stir fried noodle with tofu for dinner. Mom and I had Chinese food in a restaurant at metro station near the Prater. We picked a cup size, and squeezed the dishes that we wanted into the cup, something similar to cai fan, but we could choose as many dishes as we wanted as long as they could all be filled in the cup.
