2022 Austria Day 9: Sigmund-Thun Klamm, Stausee Mooserboden, Zell am See-Kaprun

16 Sep 2022: Day 9

It was unfortunately a rainy day, and all of our sightseeing places were outdoor today.

Sigmund-Thun Klamm is a stunning ravine with an excellent wooden track which takes about 20-30 minutes to go through the gorge. The wooden track is one way only, will have to take another road to get back to the car. At the end of the trail you will reach gorgeous lake called Klammsee. The trail takes around takes 30min.

In the heart of the Hohe Tauern National Park lie the Mooserboden reservoirs, two artificial lakes perched at 2,040 metres above sea level. In order to provide power to the many villages and hamlets around the area, the Stausee Mooserboden was created in 1955, and it gets its freshwater from the glaciers of Großglockner. We parked at the ticketing office, transferred to their first shuttle bus, rode on a huge ski bus, then to another shutter bus. The whole ascend took 45min including waiting. We only had 10min of sunshine during the bus journey, by the time we reached the dam, what we saw were fog everywhere. I wished we could have arrived half an hour earlier

We drove to Zell am See-Kaprun, a town where we spent one night. The rain had stopped and we decided to do a boat ride in this short time we had before the sunset. Believe it or not, a driving license is actually required to drive this electrical boat. This was the second and also the last time my father drove a vehicle in the entire trip. He drove the car once but he  could not manage driving at the opposite side.

Time for snacking, I thought this Belgian waffle was a little sticky. We also bought one ice cream cone to share.
